Base token VIRTUAL listed on Kraken — but not Coinbase

Crypto exchange Kraken has opted to list a Solana blockchain version of a Coinbase Base blockchain asset. The irony of Solana offloading the processing of Coinbase’s supposedly ultra-scalable Base blockchain is funny enough on its own — not to mention the further irony of Kraken listing a Coinbase asset before Coinbase itself. The digital asset, Virtuals (VIRTUAL), is a metaverse token that’s best known for its 70% decline in price in the past four weeks . The token claims to be useful for a dizzying array of “metaverse infrastructure” like digital identity, ticketing, cross-world interoperability, NFT ownership, gaming transactions, and social interactions. kraken listing solana virtual before coinbase lists base virtual https://t.co/WivdpaNGKE — ceteris (@ceterispar1bus) February 12, 2025 Base protocol Virtuals chooses… Solana Rather than maintain a dedication to its founding blockchain, Virtuals Protocol decided on January 25...

‘Metaverse technology is still immature, but in 30 years, everyone will use it’

Crypto.news spoke with David Shrier, the author of the book ‘Basic Metaverse,’ about the future of the virtual world. Crypto.news discussed these and other concerns with David Shrier, a futurist, author, and entrepreneur, at Websummit in Lisbon. Meta committed to metaverse despite $3.7b Q2 loss

Meta’s Reality Labs division recorded a $3.7 billion operating loss in Q2 this year. Yet, the social media giant remains fully committed to metaverse development. So far, in 2023, Meta has invested a staggering $7.7 billion in its virtual reality business, according to Meta’s latest earnings results released on July 26. The unit’s revenue declined to $276 million in the same quarter from $452 million last year. This decrease was attributed to lower Quest 2 virtual reality headset sales. During an earnings call, Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, emphasized their dedication to artificial intelligence (AI) and the metaverse vision. He explained that the company has been actively working on these priorities for years and sees them as overlapping and complementary endeavors. Apple’s headset could redefine what being in the metaverse means

Image
KPMG's Head of Metaverse Alyse Sue believes the tech included in Apple’s mixed reality headset could shift the way users interact and experience the metaverse. The release of Apple’s new mixed-reality headset, Vision Pro, could cause a seismic shift in how users will experience the metaverse, with developers potentially moving away from the absolute isolation of virtual reality. Unlike today's virtual reality headset s, which center on full immersion, Apple’s Vision Pro — unveiled on June 5 — can also superimpose applications onto the real world, letting users "interact with digital content in a way that feels like it is physically present in their space.” Apple's AR headset revealed - Apple Vision Pro pic.twitter.com/UpNM7cH5yL — Wario64 (@Wario64) June 5, 2023 Speaking to Cointelegraph, KPMG’s Head of Metaverse Alyse Su believes the Vision Pro will shift developer focus away from purely immersive virtual worlds. Artists face a choice with AI: Adapt or become obsolete

Image
Art generated by artificial intelligence is making waves because of its ramifications — for originality, authorship, and authenticity. The artificial intelligence Art gold rush began around 2018 when Christie’s auctioned “Portrait of Edmond Belamy” for an astounding $432,500. Since then, it has been an up-only journey for AI-generated images. “Théâtre D’opéra Spatial,” Jason Allen’s AI artwork, even won a prize at the Colorado State Fair art competition. This shows how AI-generated images have not only become more popular but also very sophisticated recently. But not everyone is happy about this development, and their concerns are valid. The evolution of AI art has sparked feisty debates around originality, authorship and authenticity — themes fundamental to artistic expression. Generative AI, like any other technology, is intent-neutral. Whether the outcome is good or bad depends on how we use it. So, it’s crucial to understand how and to what extent AI influences artistic communitie...
